Anastasiia Chernova
Watercolor artist (Berlin)
One phrase that best describes her work is ‘the search for light.’ The search for light by a person who emigrated, who was uprooted from their familiar environment due to circumstances beyond their control. Anastasia is an artist who is constantly searching for a ‘foothold,’ who is sensitive to ‘home’ as a phenomenon. Where is her home? She is constantly searching for it, constantly trying out different cities and countries, listening and looking closely in every alleyway, because she has not yet found her new inner home. Her city is often slightly hazy, slightly shaky, as if it captures not the architecture, but the emotional temperature of the space. Watercolour, with its fluidity and transparency, is perfectly suited to this task. Her two main lines of work (architecture and abstraction) are actually one. Her abstractions look like the birth of a space that has not yet decided what to be. This is because she works with one phenomenon: transition: from the internal to the external, from shadow to light and vice versa, from chaos to form, from memories to the present. Her abstractions are a deconstructive stage where space is just being formed. Urban landscapes are the moment when the world has taken shape but still remembers its chaos.
